Considering training to become an equine massage therapist? If so it is important to understand the role of the International Federation of Registered Equine Massage Therapists and the ways in which they help to promote the highest standards in equine massage.
The International Federation of Registered Equine Massage Therapists is a not-for-profit organization established for the purpose of promoting high standard, safe and ethical equine massage therapy. Established in 1996, the IFREMT sets and maintains standards of practice and professional ethics to the same level of the qualification standards set out by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) for Registered Massage Therapists in the province of Ontario. The mission of the IFREMT is ”to support the provision of ethical, safe and qualified equine massage therapy services within the equine industry.”
Currently, equine massage is an unregulated profession. Registered Equine Massage Therapist (REMT) is a legally protected title and can only be used by individuals who have met the educational requirements defined by the IFREMT and have passed their registration exams. To become eligible to write the registration exams you must complete a 2 year, 2200 hour program in equine massage therapy.
“Our membership represents individuals committed to substantive training and education in their chosen profession, and who are dedicated to maintaining the highest standards in their practice.”
Equine massage therapy is the systematic manipulation of soft tissues of the body. The purpose is to develop, maintain, rehabilitate or augment physical function or relieve pain. Massage is a non-invasive approach that may also incorporate hydrotherapy and remedial exercise. Equine Massage Therapists work closely with veterinarians to ensure safe and effective treatment.
Some of ways in which the IFREMT aim to achieve their objectives include, though are not limited to, the following:
• Administering accreditation exams
• Issuing registration with the IFREMT
• Developing and maintaining standards of practice and professional ethics
• Promoting REMTs as valuable members of the equine health care team
• Maintaining a public listing of all Registered Equine Massage Therapists (REMTs) by region
D’Arcy Lane highly encourages all of our graduates to take the registration exams through the IFREMT.
